The Law of Attraction Simplified: LOA in Recovery
The law of attraction can be a powerful asset as you journey through recovery. This profound law can help you become the person you want to be, whilst creating the life you dream of.
Read on to discover what the law of attraction is and how it works. Then, follow our step-by-step guide towards beginning your own manifestation journey.
What is the law of attraction?
The law of attraction is a law of the universe that essentially states like attracts like.
If you keep yourself in a higher, more positive vibration, you'll attract more positive experiences. On the other end, if you keep yourself on a lower more negative vibration, you'll attract more negative experiences. Whatever you put out will attract more of the same thing. The energy of your thoughts and emotions attracts the energy of similar people or experiences.
Let's say for instance you wake up in the morning and stub your toe. This immediately frustrates you, and you're now on this vibration of frustration. According to the law of attraction, you then continue to attract more things that frustrate you because that is the vibration that you're currently on. So, you spill your coffee on yourself, you're late for work, and your boss then reprimands you about something.
Many people live their lives on autopilot, not realising that their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are creating the world around them.
When you decide what you want and align energetically to that thing, the law of attraction has to bring that thing to you. However, many people think that they just have to ask for what they want and they will receive it, not realising that they have to believe they can receive it as well. Limiting beliefs are what inhibits many people from experiencing their own internal power using the law of attraction.
How does the law of attraction work
The law of attraction is always working, whether you are intentionally using it or not. A foundational concept in understanding the law of attraction is knowing that everything in the universe is made of energy.
This can be a hard concept to grasp when you look at the world around you through your eyes, and it appears to be a solid, material world. However, if you look at any material item through a microscope and break it down to its smallest components, you'll find atoms. Atoms are often referred to as the building blocks of the universe, and they are not solid. Atoms are just energy.
Additionally, everything in the universe is constantly vibrating. Energy is constantly vibrating. Different things vibrate at different frequencies. We can feel vibrations, even if we can’t see them. For instance, if you walk into a room after someone was just talking about you, or after people were just arguing, you can feel the tension in the air. It is palpable. What you're feeling is that vibration and energy of tension. You can't see it, but you know it's there.
Law of attraction as a radio
The law of attraction works much like a radio. If you want to listen to 97.5, you would adjust the tuner on your radio to that frequency. If you want to listen to 100.3, you would then adjust your tuner to that frequency. Similarly, your thoughts act as the tuner. The thoughts you have dictate what frequency you are on. By shifting your thoughts, you can shift your frequency to a different vibration. You can align yourself to the vibration of whatever it is you desire.
After you develop the understanding that like attracts like, you can work on shifting your own energy to attract more of the energy you do want. You can attract the people, experiences, and even sobriety you seek.
Who benefits from the law of attraction?
The law of attraction benefits anyone who uses it intentionally. When you realise the innate power you have to change yourself and create the reality you want, you truly experience no bounds.
When you're in recovery, the law of attraction is so powerful in helping you align with the type of person you want to be. There's a misconception that the law of attraction can only bring material items, but you can also use it to create characteristics for yourself, such as patience, consistency, honesty, or being loving. Developing these traits will not only benefit you, but will also help you improve your relationships with others.
How to use the law of attraction
If you’re interested in utilising the law of attraction to improve your life, below is a simple guide to getting started.
Choose what you want
The first step in using the law of attraction is to decide what you want. This is important because an energy of uncertainty or indecision will bring about more circumstances that make you feel uncertain or indecisive.
Additionally, many people have trouble admitting what they really want, often due to their own limiting beliefs or societal expectations.
Get clear on what you want, whether you're hoping to gain characteristics like peace or discipline, or if you want to gain things that are more material such as a certain type of job or certain type of relationship.
How to apply this toward recovery
When applying the law of attraction towards your addiction recovery, you may decide that you want sobriety. This can sound obvious, but it may be difficult for many people to actually decide that this is what they want. A sober lifestyle is vastly different than the lifestyle of active addiction, and being sober means having to learn many new things. It can be scary for some, but it's important to make that commitment and decide that sobriety is what you want.
Believe you can get it
After you decide what you want, the next step is to believe that you can actually have it. This is the part where many people hit a wall in their manifestation journey. They have trouble aligning their beliefs with their desires.
Look at what you really want, and then look at whether you believe you can actually attain it. The truth is, anyone can attain anything. However, you are probably telling yourself stories about why you can't have the thing that you want.
You may come up against many limiting beliefs that are keeping you small and safe within your comfort zone. (Remember, a comfort zone isn't necessarily a comfortable place.)
If it's a new job that you want, do you actually believe that you can get it? Or do you believe it's out of reach for you?
Look at what you want, and observe the blocks that are coming up against why you don't think you can have it.
In regards to limiting beliefs, if you want a new job...
- Do you believe you're worthy of having that job, or of making a certain amount of money?
- Do you believe you would be successful in the role, or do you believe you wouldn't do a good job?
All of these ideas are limiting beliefs that are holding you back from aligning with the energy of the job.
How to apply this towards recovery
Let's say you've decided that you want to achieve sobriety.
- Do you actually believe you're capable of achieving sobriety?
- Do you feel you're deserving of living a happy and fulfilling life?
Of course you are, but your beliefs may be telling you otherwise.
If you desire sobriety and recovery, list out all of the stories you tell yourself about why you can't achieve it.
All these stories are your limiting beliefs, and they are not ultimately true. These negative beliefs will hold you back and keep you where you are if you don't work on shifting them.
So, write down more positive supportive beliefs and work on affirming them to yourself day in and day out.
In addition to achieving sobriety, you can also use manifestation in recovery to achieve peace, happiness, creativity, passion, making new friends and relationships, and moving towards your goals.
Increase your vibration
While you work on crushing those limiting beliefs, it's also important to do things that increase your vibration. As mentioned earlier, when you're on a lower vibration you attract more low-vibrational thoughts, feelings, experiences, and people. Conversely, when you're on a high vibration, you attract much more positive thoughts, feelings, experiences, and people.
Increasing your vibration is simply about feeling good. Some things that can help increase your vibration are exercising or meditating, but some things are more unorthodox. For example, if you love watching dramatic movies, and that makes you feel good, this will help you increase your vibration. If you love making crafts or creating art, this will increase your vibration. Hanging out with friends or family who you can laugh with will increase your vibration.
It's easy to get caught up in mundane day-to-day activities without intentionally setting aside time to have fun, but this is truly an important part of the law of attraction. You want to vibrate high, because the things that you desire are likely also on a higher vibration.
Embody the vibration of your desires
Along with increasing your vibration, it's also important to embody the vibration of your desires. Step into the version of yourself that you want to be right now. This will allow you to energetically align with whatever it is you are trying to call in.
How to apply this toward recovery
In recovery, embodying the vibration of your desires can look like stepping into a version of yourself who is sober.
If you were drug and alcohol-free for one month, what would that be like for you?
What about 6 months? What about 1 year?
Take the time to sit in silence and visualise what this would feel like in your body.
- What would your life look like?
- How would you feel about yourself?
- What would your relationships be like?
A great exercise for doing this can also be to journal about it. Whatever you do, the important part here is to feel the energy of that version of yourself.
Be open to receiving it
Lastly, you must be open to receiving your desires. Again this may seem obvious, but making an oversight here is a surefire way to block yourself from using the law of attraction intentionally.
Being open to receiving your desires, once again, ties into your limiting beliefs. In an earlier example, receiving a job was mentioned as a desire. On the surface level you may say that you want the job, but do you really? Are you ready for all the responsibilities that it entails? Again, do you feel worthy of receiving the salary that is tied to the job?
Many people block their manifestations by not being open when it comes to receiving. Blocks here often come in the form of lack of self-worth, lack of self-esteem, feelings of unworthiness, etc.
Perhaps the way you were raised or the messages you heard growing up also created limiting beliefs within you about your ability to have a certain job, or the type of people that have great jobs. The messages you grew up hearing have a profound impact on the beliefs you have about yourself and the world around you.
It's important to work through the limiting beliefs you have about yourself so that you can have faith in your desires from a true, authentic place, but also so you can actually receive your desires. This is a key element of the law of attraction.
How to apply this toward recovery
Many in recovery struggle with feelings of guilt and shame. You may beat yourself up for things you did in active addiction, or even before. Because of this, in conjunction with other limiting beliefs you may already have, you might not feel worthy of experiencing sobriety. You may feel undeserving of feeling happiness, joy, and peace.
If your relationships with significant others, family members, and friends became damaged through the course of your addiction, you may be afraid of trying to develop new relationships. You may not feel worthy of having unconditional love and support in your life. All of these concepts are limiting beliefs that will block you from receiving your desires, even if you want them on a surface level.
Be sure to do the inner work to observe your beliefs and shift them. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a great way of assessing what your own thoughts are, which can sometimes be difficult to do on your own. Your thoughts are always an indicator of your beliefs, so they’re a great place to start when trying to understand what may be blocking you from receiving.
Meditation is also a great way to gain access to what your beliefs are. Silent meditation creates stillness and calm, but also allows for separation between you and your thoughts. When this happens, you learn to observe your thoughts from a third-party perspective rather than being consumed by them.
Bonus tips on using the law of attraction
It's important to remember that you should always take inspired action, and take the steps towards achieving your goals. When using the law of attraction intentionally, you are co-creating with the universe. This doesn’t mean that you’re meant to stop living your life and wait for the law of attraction to “work.” Continue to live your life and take the steps towards what you want, especially when inspiration hits or your intuition is nudging you in a certain direction.
Live intentionally
Using the law of attraction is intentional and requires daily, conscious effort. Create habits that incorporate manifestation practises into your day. Remind yourself daily of what your goals are, and why you deserve them. Recite affirmations and journal in order to observe and shift your limiting beliefs. Make time to have fun and do things that increase your vibration. Most importantly, always have faith that what you want is on its way to you.
Be mindful of toxic positivity
Many people believe that you have to be positive all the time in order to reap the benefits of the law of attraction, but this can be an incredibly toxic belief. You’re human, and you will have times when you feel sad, upset, or angry. Allow yourself to work through those emotions instead of pushing them down. When you don't work through those emotions, they don't go away, but stay within you and keep your vibration low. So be sure to face the difficult emotions and navigate your way through them. The more often you do this, the easier it will become.
Lastly, remember that you’re always manifesting, all of the time! It isn’t something you start doing once you learn about it – it’s something you’ve done, unintentionally, you’re entire life. Now, you have the knowledge to use this powerful law in your favour, and to create the life you truly desire.
